Benefits of Cedar for Your Wood Fence Installation
Cedar fencing is a popular choice for its natural beauty, durability, and versatility. Here's why a cedar wood fence installed on your property might be the perfect option:
Unmatched Versatility
Cedar fences offer virtually unlimited residential wood fence styles to choose from, unlike the more uniform look of vinyl fences or chain link fences. From standard privacy fences with vertical or horizontal pickets to semi-privacy, shadowbox (aka good neighbor fence), diverse railing options, and board-on-board designs, the options are endless. Our skilled carpenters can bring your vision to life, creating a fence that perfectly complements your home's style.
Easy Repairs
Depending on the design, a cedar fence can be relatively easy to repair, saving you time and money in the long run.
Terrain Adaptability
Cedar fences with vertical pickets can easily follow the contours of your property, making them ideal for keeping dogs in your yard or other animals out, unlike chain link fences or vinyl fences which might not blend as seamlessly.
Eco-Friendly Option
Being a natural wood product, cedar fences are environmentally friendly, appealing to eco-conscious homeowners.
Craftsman Approach
At Thrive Fencing, we take pride in our carpentry skills, ensuring your cedar fence becomes an elegant part of your backyard oasis. Our experienced craftsmen meticulously select each cedar board, paying attention to grain patterns and natural characteristics.
Superior Durability
We use steel PostMasters posts instead of traditional wood 4x4s for our fence posts and fence construction. These PostMasters are heavy-duty, sturdier, and longer-lasting than wood posts, resisting warping and rot. This ensures your fence remains straight and strong for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Wood & Cedar Fences
Cedar has oils that make it naturally resistant to bugs and decay, and thus does not need to be chemically treated or stained. For that reason, unless there are other specific project requirements, Thrive Fencing only installs cedar boards for fences. Other materials (such as pine) should have a chemical treatment and thus are commonly called “green-treated” wood.
Cedar and treated pine will naturally be gray if not stained. Some people prefer that look, as it may blend into surroundings including trees and landscaping.
While checking (cracking) in wood is natural and shouldn’t impact the structural integrity of your fencing unless extreme, it may be unsightly. Checking can be greatly reduced by periodic staining.
Wood posts are weakest where they enter the ground…as bugs and decay from moisture weaken the post and that point is the fulcrum where the fence is the wind-catching lever. This can be virtually eliminated by using steel posts [link to Postmaster youtube video], which can withstand extreme winds. If you’re looking to expand the life of a fence with wood posts, ensure that water runs away by packing dirt around posts at a slope away from them.
Common types of wood used for fences include cedar and treated pine, however, redwood and spruce are options at a significantly higher cost. Cedar is the most common wood that we install.
Treated wood is infused with chemicals to resist decay, insects, and moisture. Untreated wood does not have this protection and is not recommend in an outdoor setting (unless cedar or redwood)
Costs vary widely based on the type of wood, the height and length of the fence, number and size of gates, and design/style. Plan on at least $50 per linear foot for a high quality cedar fence.
With proper maintenance, a wood fence can last anywhere from 15 to 30 years. The type of wood and climate conditions also play a significant role in its longevity. Staining the fence will enhance lifespan.
