Galvanization bonds a zinc layer to carbon steel, protecting it from oxidation. The zinc sacrificially corrodes to protect the underlying steel — as long as the zinc layer is intact, the steel will not rust. In fencing, galvanized steel is the standard structural material for chain link components: posts, top rails, tension wire, fabric, and hardware fittings. In Iowa’s climate, galvanized chain link typically lasts 20–30 years. Vinyl-coated chain link adds a PVC layer over the zinc for additional protection and color options.
