Wood Fence (Cedar)
Definition
Cedar is the preferred wood species for residential fencing in Iowa due to its natural oils that resist moisture penetration and insect damage without chemical treatment. Cedar boards are milled into 1×4 or 1×6 profiles for picket and privacy fencing. Cedar can be racked to follow sloped terrain — a major advantage over vinyl. Pre-staining before installation (Thrive uses Wood Defender brand stain) coats all four sides including cut ends, providing significantly better moisture protection than post-installation staining. Re-staining every 2–3 years is standard maintenance in Iowa’s climate. Cedar is heavier than vinyl but lighter and more workable than composite.
