1-Year Labor Warranty
Thrive Fencing's written guarantee that all installation workmanship defects will be corrected at no charge within one year of project completion — backed by Micah Taintor's personal commitment to address workmanship concerns even after the formal warranty period expires.
Ameristar
A US-based manufacturer of premium ornamental steel and aluminum fence systems — Thrive Fencing's preferred supplier for ornamental installations, offering heavy-gauge steel construction, durable powder-coat finishes, and lifetime structural warranties.
Anti-Climb Fence
A fence designed or specified to make scaling difficult or impossible — through solid panel construction, lack of horizontal footholds, tight picket spacing, or height — used for pool enclosures, security perimeters, and properties with children or pets.
Auto-Latching Gate
A gate with a latch mechanism that engages automatically when the gate closes — required on pool enclosures alongside self-closing hardware, with the latch on the pool side at a minimum of 54 inches from the ground.
AZEK (PVC Trim)
A cellular PVC building trim product used by Thrive Fencing to fill gaps between fence components and adjacent structures, between stair-stepped panels and the ground, or wherever a weather-resistant, maintenance-free finish infill is needed.
Bell Footings
A concrete footing poured in a flared, bell-shaped profile — wider at the base than at the top — used on gate posts and heavy fence posts to resist frost heave in Iowa's freeze-thaw climate.
Boundary Fence
A fence installed along a property line to demarcate the legal boundary between adjoining properties — subject to Iowa Code Chapter 359A for shared fence responsibilities and local municipal setback and permit requirements.
Brace Bands / Tension Bands
Galvanized steel stamped hardware fittings used in chain link fence assembly — tension bands secure the chain link fabric to terminal posts; brace bands hold top rail fittings and brace rails to all posts.
Certified Fence Contractor
A fence installation professional who holds the American Fence Association (AFA) Certified Fence Professional (CFP) designation — demonstrating verified knowledge of installation techniques, material properties, safety codes, and business ethics.
Chain Link Fence
A woven wire fence made from interlocked galvanized or vinyl-coated steel — the most economical fencing option, widely used for residential dog containment, sports enclosures, and commercial perimeters.
Commercial Fencing
Fence installation and repair for businesses, schools, municipalities, and commercial property owners — using commercial-grade materials (Ameristar Montage Plus), IBC-compliant gate hardware, and managed commercial permitting across central Iowa.
Composite Fence (Trex / Azek)
A fence manufactured from composite lumber — a blend of wood fiber and recycled plastic — that delivers the natural appearance of wood with no staining, no painting, no rotting, and no splintering required.
Crash Rating
A formal test certification — under the US Department of State K-rating or ASTM F2656 standard — documenting that a fence, gate, or barrier physically stopped a 15,000-lb vehicle at a specified speed (K4 = 30 mph, K8 = 40 mph, K12 = 50 mph).
Crash-Rated Fence
A fence or barrier system certified under a formal crash-test standard (US Department of State K-rating or ASTM F2656) to stop a vehicle of specified weight traveling at a specified speed — used for vehicle anti-ram protection at commercial and government properties.
Custom Gate Fabrication
The in-house design and manufacturing of gates built to non-standard specifications — including sloped bottom rails for terrain, oversized openings, automated hardware integration, or decorative requirements — standard Thrive capability, not a premium add-on.
Deflection / Sagging
Any visible bending, drooping, or leaning of fence rails, panels, or gates away from their intended flat, level, or plumb position — almost always a structural root-cause problem (heaved post, undersized footing, rotted rail) rather than a hardware problem.
Donuts (Post Spacers)
Circular PVC spacers placed along an inner steel fence post at installation intervals before the vinyl decorative sleeve is slid over it — centering the sleeve and preventing wobble, squeaking, and cracking.
Egress
A required means of exit from a fenced enclosure — in residential pool fencing, the gate must allow exit from the inside without a key; in commercial fencing, egress requirements may mandate panic exit hardware on gates.
Fabric / Mesh (Chain Link)
The diamond-pattern woven wire that forms the visible barrier of a chain link fence — specified by wire gauge (11-gauge residential, 9-gauge commercial) and mesh opening size (2-inch standard, smaller for pet applications) and replaceable independently of posts and rails.
Fence Installation
The complete project lifecycle of designing, permitting, and constructing a new fence — from initial estimate through 811 utility marking, post setting, panel installation, gate hanging, and final inspection — Thrive Fencing's primary service across central Iowa.
Fence Repair
The diagnosis and correction of fence damage or structural failure — including post re-setting, panel replacement, gate adjustment, chain link fabric replacement, and hardware upgrades — performed by Thrive on all fence materials regardless of original installer.
Fence Staining
The application of a penetrating wood stain to cedar fence boards to protect against Iowa's freeze-thaw moisture, UV damage, and rot — offered by Thrive as a pre-installation treatment (all four board sides coated) using Wood Defender brand stain.
Finials
The shaped tips at the tops of ornamental steel or aluminum fence pickets — typically spear or lance points that define the classic ornamental aesthetic but create an impaling risk in pool, pet, and child-play applications.
Free Estimate
A no-cost, no-obligation written project quote from Thrive Fencing — including site visit, terrain and soil assessment, material recommendation, permit requirement review, and transparent itemized pricing with no hidden fees.
Frost Heave
The upward displacement of soil and embedded fence posts caused by the expansion of freezing groundwater — the #1 cause of post and gate failure in Iowa's climate, where frost lines reach 42–48 inches.
Galvanized Steel
Steel coated with a layer of zinc through a hot-dip or electroplating process — providing the primary corrosion protection for chain link fence posts, rails, and fabric in Iowa's climate.
Gate Fork / Strike Bolt
Heavy-duty gate hardware — a forked bracket or ground sleeve with a sliding steel bolt — used to secure the stationary leaf of a double gate or provide a secondary lock point; Micah Taintor's preferred security hardware over keyed latches in Iowa's winters.
Gate Installation
The professional installation of a hinged or sliding gate — including oversized post setting with bell footings, hardware selection, plumb verification, and adjustment for swing, latch, and closure — the most technically demanding part of any fence project.
Horizontal Fence
A modern fence style where boards run parallel to the ground (horizontally) instead of vertically — creating a contemporary aesthetic but significantly easier to climb than vertical privacy fencing.
Impaling Risk
The potential for serious injury from contact with spear-shaped ornamental fence finials — a recognized safety hazard Thrive Fencing discloses for pool, child, and pet applications and mitigates by offering flat-top panel alternatives.
Infill
Material added between fence rails, posts, or pickets to increase privacy, close gaps, or convert an open fence style (ornamental steel, chain link) into a semi-private or private barrier.
Jogging
A field technique where a fence line is offset or redirected around an obstacle — tree, utility box, or structure — using angled panel sections that bypass the obstacle and return to the original fence plane.
Labor Warranty
A contractor's guarantee that workmanship defects in installation will be corrected at no charge — distinct from manufacturer material warranties — covering post-setting errors, gate hardware failures, and panel-securing defects for a defined period.
Local Fence Contractor (vs. National Franchise)
A locally owned, independently operated fence company — Thrive Fencing — distinguished from national franchise operations by Iowa-specific installation expertise, direct owner involvement on every project, and community accountability that national operators cannot replicate.
Montage Plus
Ameristar's commercial-grade ornamental steel fence product line — featuring heavier steel tube walls, stronger picket-to-rail welds, and a more robust powder-coat system than standard residential Ameristar products — specified by Thrive for commercial ornamental steel projects.
Ornamental Aluminum Fence
A lightweight, rust-resistant ornamental fence made from extruded aluminum — visually similar to ornamental steel but significantly softer, more prone to permanent denting, and not recommended by Thrive for most Iowa applications.
Ornamental Fence
A decorative fence style — typically steel or aluminum — featuring vertical pickets, horizontal rails, and shaped finials that replicate the aesthetic of traditional wrought iron at a fraction of the cost.
Ornamental Steel Fence
A manufactured steel fence system with vertical pickets, horizontal rails, and powder-coat finish — Thrive Fencing's preferred ornamental product, supplied by Ameristar with lifetime structural warranties and significantly stronger than ornamental aluminum.
Oxidation / Rust
The reaction between exposed steel and oxygen or moisture that produces iron oxide (rust) — manageable on ornamental steel fencing when the protective powder coat is intact, but progressive once a chip or scratch exposes bare metal.
Panic Exit Device
A gate hardware system (panic bar or crash bar) that releases the latch with a single push on a horizontal bar — required by IBC Section 1010 on commercial fencing exits serving schools, assembly occupancies, and other applicable buildings.
Perimeter Fence
A continuous fence enclosing the full boundary of a commercial or institutional property — designed for access control, security, and legal demarcation, typically using heavier-gauge materials and commercial gate systems.
Pickets
The individual vertical boards or metal spindles that form the visible face of a fence — attached to horizontal rails between posts and defining the fence's style, gap width, and safety characteristics.
Plumb
The condition of a fence post or panel being perfectly vertical — 90 degrees to the ground — verified with a level during installation and essential for proper fence alignment and gate function.
Pool Code Compliance
Adherence to local Iowa building ordinances governing swimming pool enclosures — typically following IRC Section R326 — requiring minimum 48-inch fence height, maximum 4-inch gaps, no climbable features, and compliant self-closing/auto-latching gate hardware.
Pool Fence (Code-Compliant)
A fence enclosing a residential or commercial swimming pool that meets International Residential Code (IRC) Section R326 requirements — minimum 48-inch height, maximum 4-inch gaps, no climbable features, and compliant self-closing/auto-latching gate hardware.
Post Extenders
Steel brackets or sleeves that bolt onto the top of an existing chain link fence post to increase its effective height — enabling fence height conversion (typically 4-foot to 6-foot) without removing and replacing the original posts.
Post Setting (Pounded vs. Concrete)
The method by which fence posts are secured in the ground — either hydraulically driven (pounded) into stable soil or set in concrete footings — with critical implications for frost heave resistance and long-term fence stability in Iowa's climate.
Privacy Fence
A solid fence design with no gaps between boards or panels — blocking all sightlines from outside the property to provide visual privacy, noise reduction, and security.
Professional Installation (vs. DIY)
Fence installation performed by a trained, licensed contractor — as opposed to do-it-yourself installation — with documented Iowa-specific advantages: frost-line post depth, 811 utility marking, bell footings on gate posts, permit management, and a 1-year labor warranty.
Puppy Picket Fence
An ornamental steel fence panel configuration with a second row of shorter pickets added in the lower section — halving the effective gap width to prevent small dogs and puppies from pushing through standard 3.5–4 inch ornamental picket spacing.
Racking
A fence installation technique where the panel or individual pickets are angled to follow sloping terrain — rails tilt with the grade while pickets remain vertical — available for wood and ornamental steel but not vinyl or pre-fabricated composite.
Rails
The horizontal structural members of a fence that span between posts and support the pickets, boards, or infill panels — typically two rails for fences under 4 feet and three rails for 6-foot fences.
Residential Fencing
All fence installation and repair services for private homes and owner-occupied residential properties across central Iowa — including privacy, ornamental steel, chain link, dog and pet, kid-safety, and pool fencing.
Security Fence
A fence system designed to deter or prevent unauthorized entry — combining height, solid panel design or anti-climb picket configuration, and secure gate hardware to protect residential or commercial property.
Self-Closing Gate
A gate equipped with spring-loaded or hydraulic hinges that automatically return the gate to the closed position after being opened — a code requirement for pool enclosure gates under IRC Section R326.
Shadow Box Fence
A wood fence design where boards alternate on opposite sides of the horizontal rails, giving both neighbors a finished-face appearance while leaving small gaps that allow airflow but reduce sightlines.
Stair-Stepping
A fence installation method for sloped terrain where rigid panels (typically vinyl or composite) are installed level at progressively lower elevations — creating a stepped profile and ground-level gaps that must be managed with AZEK trim or grading.
String Line
A taut mason's string pulled between two anchor posts before setting line posts — the most basic alignment tool in fence installation, ensuring all intermediate posts fall on the same plane.
Tamping
The process of compacting soil or gravel backfill around a fence post in successive layers to eliminate air pockets and stabilize the post — a required step for all post installations whether or not concrete is used.
Temporary / Construction Fence
Free-standing chain link fence panels set in weighted bases — used to secure active construction sites, control pedestrian access, or define temporary work zones without post holes or permanent anchors.
Utility Marking / 811
The process of calling 811 (Iowa One Call) at least 48 hours before driving any fence post or digging — required by Iowa state law to have underground utility lines marked so they are not struck during installation.
Vinyl Fence
A fence manufactured from extruded PVC (polyvinyl chloride) — maintenance-free in terms of painting or staining, but requires stair-stepping on sloped terrain and becomes brittle under impact in cold Iowa temperatures.
Vinyl-Coated Chain Link
Chain link fence fabric and hardware with a PVC vinyl coating applied over the standard galvanized wire — available in black, green, and brown to improve appearance and extend corrosion resistance compared to bare galvanized chain link.
Wood Fence (Cedar)
A fence constructed from western red cedar boards — naturally resistant to moisture and insects, workable on sloped terrain through racking, and the most customizable residential fence material available in central Iowa.
Wrought Iron Fence
A fence style named for a historic hand-forging process that is rarely used today — in modern usage, 'wrought iron fence' almost always refers to manufactured ornamental steel fencing that mimics the traditional wrought iron aesthetic.
