Thrive Fencing Plans in Detail, Communicates Clearly, And Builds to Last.
Here's exactly what to expect when you work with us in the Des Moines Metro and surrounding Central Iowa communities.
Our Standards
We keep your project on schedule and eliminate guesswork by doing the unglamorous work up front.
"Most fence problems don't happen because someone meant to do a bad job.
They happen because there wasn't a system, or they didn't have the skill required to execute the task."
—Micah, Thrive Fencing
How Our Installation Process Works
Walkthrough & layout planning
Together, we decide where the fence returns to your house—often the back corner so you can always see kids and pets from the deck. If you're near a neighbor's fence, we review options: set our own terminal post next to theirs, or—with permission—attach properly with the correct fittings. If needed we can add gap fillers.
Slope measurement & custom gates
We measure grade at gate openings and custom build gates to match slope (e.g., a 4 inch slope gets a 4 inch sloped gate). We place gates for real-world use...side yard access, neighbor tie ins, and utility access.
Utilities & safe digging
We request utility locates. If a line is within 18 inches of a post location, we hand dig by law. We lay out posts (often 7–8 ft spacing) to "leapfrog" marked lines—reducing risk and delays.
Property pins, plats & easements
We locate property pins and review plats. If storm sewer or overland flow easements exist, we verify what can/can't be built before permitting. We confirm setbacks and sightlines so your fence passes inspection and lives well long-term.
Precise materials planning
Every post, fitting, tension band, and tool is accounted for in advance. No guesswork.
Scheduling & site prep
We coordinate HOA approvals and permits. We factor Iowa weather, frost/heave considerations, soffit clearance for post pounding, and hose bib access (important for privacy fences). Every property is different, and utilities and weather can affect the schedule. Here's the typical flow:
- Design & estimate: fast turnaround
- Utility locates: generally 2–3 business days after request (varies by provider)
- HOA/permits: varies by city/HOA
- Installation window: scheduled to your availability and weather windows
Installation standards
Posts are set to spec (depth/diameter, appropriate concrete mix where used). Big grade changes get intermediate terminals to keep panels true. Gates are reinforced, aligned, and tuned. Hardware is secured and adjusted for smooth, safe operation.
Cleanup & final walkthrough
Before we collect final payment, we complete a structured walkthrough covering alignment, gate operation, hardware security, finish quality, cleanup, and your approval. A fence should feel complete—not rushed.
What's Not Included
To keep your expectations clear, here's what falls outside standard fence installation:
Survey
We work from existing property pins when present and verifiable. If pins are missing or uncertain, we recommend hiring a licensed surveyor before we start.
Major grading, retaining walls, or landscaping:
We handle fence-related drainage planning, but large earth-moving or retaining wall projects require separate specialists.
Tree or stump removal
If a large tree is in the fence path, you'll need to arrange removal before we dig…..or we can jog around it. We can help coordinate with tree specialists.
Utility relocation
If a utility conflicts with your fence plan, the utility company handles relocation.
If you need referrals for any of these services, just ask, we're happy to help connect you with trusted partners.

Materials We Install
Ornamental Steel Fencing
An elegant and functional solution — ideal for families with kids and dogs, and for added security. Works in almost aesthetic scenario. We reinforce gate posts, align panels to grade, and handle slopes with stepped or racked sections.
Chain Link Fencing
Durable, cost effective containment that's great for side yards and full yard enclosures. Careful utility planning and custom gate placements maintain function and speed.
Vinyl & Wood Fencing
We set post depth and footings to ensure durability against wind, plan drainage, and preserve access to hose bibs and mechanicals near the house.
