Traditionally, wood fences are made of, well, wood. A drawback to a wood fence is that the posts themselves tend to degrade at ground level, either due to moisture, or bugs, or both. So several years ago, we started using what is called a postmaster, which is made by Mastro Halco. Postmasters the brand.

The upside of these is that they are much stronger than a traditional wood post. In fact, they’re rated to more than 70 mile per hour winds and several years ago during the derecho storm None of our postmaster fences failed or fell over unlike even some brand new fences that were made out of wood four by-fours So like a traditional wood fence A horizontal 2×4 gets fastened to the steel post.

There are some holes in back that allow us to put our screws in. And then these 2x4s get covered with pickets, like a traditional fence. And then the steel post itself gets covered with another picket, so you actually don’t see the metal. This way you get the strength of a steel post, while you still retain the beauty of a wood fence.

Let’s go over this in detail

Combining Strength and Beauty with Postmaster Steel Posts

Wood fences have long been a popular choice for homeowners looking to enhance their property’s privacy, security, and aesthetic appeal. However, traditional wood fencing comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when it comes to longevity and durability. In recent years, a innovative solution has emerged that combines the classic look of wood fencing with the strength of steel: the Postmaster system.

This hybrid approach is revolutionizing the fencing industry and providing homeowners with a more reliable, long-lasting option for their outdoor spaces.

The Drawbacks of Traditional Wood Fencing

For generations, wood has been the go-to material for residential fencing. Its natural beauty, versatility, and relative affordability have made it a staple in neighborhoods across the country. However, wood fences are not without their shortcomings. One of the most significant issues faced by homeowners is the degradation of fence posts at ground level.

Wood fence posts are particularly vulnerable to two primary factors: moisture and insects. When wood comes into constant contact with soil, it absorbs moisture, leading to rot and decay over time. This problem is exacerbated in areas with high rainfall or poor drainage. Additionally, wood-boring insects such as termites and carpenter ants can wreak havoc on fence posts, compromising their structural integrity.

These issues often result in leaning or completely fallen fences, creating not only an eyesore but also potential safety hazards. The need for frequent repairs or complete replacement of wood fences has led many homeowners and fencing professionals to seek out more durable alternatives.

A Game-Changing Solution

Several years ago, the fencing industry saw the introduction of a product that would address the weaknesses of traditional wood fencing while maintaining its aesthetic appeal. This innovation, known as the Postmaster, is manufactured by Master Halco, a leading name in fencing products.

The Postmaster system replaces traditional wood posts with galvanized steel posts designed to withstand the elements and provide superior structural support. These steel posts offer several advantages over their wooden counterparts:

    1. Increased Strength: Postmaster steel posts are engineered to withstand wind speeds of over 70 miles per hour. This remarkable strength was put to the test during a severe Derecho storm, where fences utilizing the Postmaster system remained standing while many newly installed wood fences succumbed to the powerful winds.
    2. Resistance to Decay: Unlike wood, steel posts are impervious to rot and insect damage. This resistance to decay significantly extends the lifespan of the fence, reducing the need for repairs and replacements.
    3. Reduced Maintenance: The durability of steel posts means less time and money spent on repairs and replacements over the years.
    4. Aesthetic Flexibility: Homeowners can still choose from a wide variety of wood types and finishes for their fence pickets, maintaining the desired look for their property.
    5. Increased Property Value: A well-maintained, durable fence can contribute to the overall value and appeal of a home.

The Beauty of Wood Meets the Strength of Steel

One of the most ingenious aspects of the Postmaster system is how it seamlessly blends the strength of steel with the traditional appearance of a wood fence. The installation process is designed to incorporate the steel posts into the fence structure while keeping them hidden from view.

Here’s how the system works:

    1. Steel Post Installation: The galvanized steel posts are securely anchored into the ground, providing a solid foundation for the fence.
    2. Horizontal Support: Traditional 2×4 wooden rails are attached to the steel posts. The Postmaster posts feature pre-drilled holes that allow for easy fastening of these horizontal supports.
    3. Picket Installation: Wood pickets are then attached to the horizontal 2x4s, just as they would be in a conventional wood fence construction.
    4. Concealing the Steel: To maintain the classic wood fence appearance, an additional picket is used to cover the steel post. This clever design element ensures that the metal components are completely hidden from view.

The result is a fence that looks identical to a traditional all-wood fence but benefits from the superior strength and durability of steel post construction.
